South California Health and Wellness Travel Guide

Welcome to Southern California, where wellness isn't just a trend — it's a lifestyle. In this guide, I uncover the hidden gems that make SoCal a health and beauty haven for those in the know. Think boutique farmer’s markets brimming with organic produce, local cosmetic brands creating clean beauty products with a touch of West Coast cool, and grocery stores that are a health enthusiast’s paradise.

California: The Return

Every five years, my daughter and I have decided to return to our base — California. These visits are more than just a trip; they are a way to reconnect with our roots of immigration, relive cherished memories, and remind ourselves of where our journey began. It’s a tradition that grounds us, providing a sense of continuity and belonging in a world that’s constantly changing. It’s our home, our place of strength, and the beginning of our immigration journey. In my childhood, I moved more than fifteen times, and you can't just pack all those memories into a box.

Your home is a place where:

  • your child goes to school for the first time;
  • they ride a bike through the streets for the first time;
  • you go on your first date at the cinema;
  • there is your favorite restaurant and, of course, your friends.

In this guide, I want to talk about my beloved California. I’ll share how it has changed over the past 10 and 5 years, highlight new places that have opened, recommend restaurants locals prefer, and suggest where to buy fresh food. I’ll also introduce you to some Californian brands that impressed me and talk about the interesting people I met.

So, let's begin!

Reunion with School Friends

I recently ended a wonderful five-year relationship. I’ve always loved celebrating Christmas and New Year in a cozy atmosphere with close friends. When my friend decided to fly to Los Angeles for her birthday, there was no doubt — I had to book a ticket for two weeks to celebrate all the holidays together! Plus, I had a work meeting with a client looking for the best plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.

When you travel with a 17-year-old teenager, you need to take their wishes into account too. This guide will be useful for those planning a trip with children.

Practical Information

Which airline to choose: JetBlue

Where to rent a car: Turo

Where to stay: Airbnb

Keep in mind that in California, you will spend a lot of time driving. Therefore, it’s essential to choose a practical and eco-friendly car. California offers an impressive variety of vehicles, especially electric and hybrid models.

Our Route

We started our trip in the area closest to my daughter Vasilisa’s school — Rolling Hills Country Day School — and our former home in Palos Verdes Estates.

I was attracted to the idea of living on the roof of a Japanese-style house with an incredible view of the port and the Queen Mary ship. The ship holds a special significance for us. It stands as a symbol of history, mystery, and resilience. My daughter, fascinated by its ghost stories and legendary status, saw it as a thrilling reminder of the past meeting the present. For me, it represented a connection to the journeys and transitions we all make, echoing our own story of moving and finding a place to belong. According to my daughter, the ship is full of ghosts, which added a mystical touch to our trip.

In the next sections of this guide, I will share the best places in California where you can:

  • spend time with friends;
  • try local delicacies;
  • discover unique Californian brands;
  • meet interesting people.
