State Changes the Processing System
The same person is not cognitively identical across states
Human adaptation cannot be explained only by stable traits.
Processing capacity changes.
Stress, fatigue, sleep deprivation, arousal and emotional load can alter attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility and executive control.
The prefrontal cortex is particularly sensitive to its neurochemical environment. Research by Arnsten and others has shown that excessive catecholamine signaling during uncontrollable stress can weaken prefrontal network function and shift behavior toward faster, more habitual or stimulus-driven systems.
This does not mean that the prefrontal cortex simply “turns off.”
It means that the balance among neural systems changes.
And with it, the optimal form of communication may change.
State changes what a useful response looks like
A person who normally wants:
competing hypotheses,
mechanism,
uncertainty ranges,
alternative strategies, and extensive evidence may not want the same response after severe sleep loss, during acute stress or while making an urgent decision.
At that moment, five intelligently presented options can still impose unnecessary decision load.
A more useful architecture might become:
1. What matters now
2. What to do next
3. What can wait
4. Details if needed
The underlying intelligence has not changed.
The available cognitive configuration has.
This is why a Direct or Low Cognitive Load response should not be interpreted as an intellectually inferior version of a complex response.
It can be an adaptation to a different processing state.
From static personalization to adaptive interaction
Most AI personalization is static.
The system receives preferences and continues using them until the user changes them.
Human Architecture proposes a broader model:
Trait → State → Context → Response
A stable profile can describe how a person generally processes information.
A state layer could eventually modify that baseline according to current physiological and cognitive conditions.
This distinction is central:
who you generally are is not always the same as what your nervous system can optimally process right now.
The current Human Architecture product focuses on trait-based adaptation.
Physiological state adaptation is a separate research direction requiring independent validation.
